Invoking the Sun's Blessings for Healing and Study
Vedika Gurukula chose the auspicious day of Makar Sankranti to begin studies in our new location. In the Gurukula tradition in which Vedika's Acharya Shunya Pratichi Mathur lived and studied, a new course of study in the sacred science of Ayurveda always began at this time when the sun begins its northern passage known as Uttarayana.
In the morning, a Vedic ritual was performed to invoke the blessings of the Sun, the nine planets, the elements, the sages, deities and sacred powers for the Gurukula space and its students. The sacred fire was lit, and the fog that had hung over the bay for weeks cleared, bathing the new space in sunlight.
In the evening, in accordance with the Gurukula tradition of her ancestors where Makar Sankranti was always celebrated with unique practices from Ayurveda's oral tradition, Shunya led both the new and the continuing students in these health-promoting practices. She guided them in understanding and paying homage to the Sun as the golden source of healing, vitality and inspiration, and in offering the ingredients of Ayurveda's great healing food, mung dal khichadi, along with donations for the needy, as a prelude to one's own healing. In this uplifting atmosphere, a fresh year of immersion in the classical Ayurveda of the Gurukula tradition began in Vedika's new home.

Sangha
Vedika Sangha is an open community forum for sharing the uplifting knowledge and flavors of Ayurveda's wisdom, foods and transformative lifestyle. Held once a month, these lively interactive events have been led by Vedika's Anchor Teachers Shunya Pratichi Mathur and Vaidya Mahesh Sabade and have explored topics such as season wellness regimes for late winter and spring, women's health, and an exploration of the medicinal spices used in Ayurvedic cooking.
A special guest at one Sangha was Salaton Ole Ntutu, a Masai leader and healer. He was delighted to hear Shunyaji speak about the special medicinal qualities of goat soup that Ayurveda details, highlighting its light, nourishing qualities, especially compared with other non-vegetarian foods. Salaton Ole Ntutu said the Masai have the same approach. They too observe that goats move around constantly and like to eat the leaves of bitter, medicinal plants, making their milk and flesh light and medicinal. Vedika's teachers in turn resonated with his description of approaching medicinal plants with reverence and prayers before harvesting their leaves and roots for healing – a practice which classical Ayurveda also highlights.
Forthcoming Sanghas will cover themes such as seasonal regimens for summer, cultivating happiness and strength of mind, children's health and more.

Water: Sweet Medicine from the Heavens
by Vedika's President Hema Patankar
Classical Ayurveda's perspectives on how to drink water for health promotion
The sages of Ayurveda call pure rainwater Gangambu, water whose origin is divine and whose journey through the skies has brought it in contact with sunlight, moonlight, and wind; water that is so pure and healing that it must surely have come from the Milky Way, the great river of light across the night sky. The Ayurveda sage Vagbhatta says this pure rainwater, collected before it touches the earth, is enlivening and satiating, it revives and refreshes the body and spirits, and stimulates the intellect. It has a subtle sweetness, is light and easy to digest, cooling though it is not chilled, and gives the effect of drinking nectar. Read more

Dr. Ram Harsh Singh at Vedika

“The integrative medicine approach has characterized the practice of Ayurveda, India's ancient science of life and health, for over 5,000 years,” said Dr. Ram Harsh Singh. “Ayurveda has always encompassed health and healing in multiple dimensions.” He was speaking at the US launch of his new book, “Body-Mind-Spirit: Integrative Medicine in Ayurveda, Yoga and Nature Cure” by Vedika's Adhyaksha, President, Hema Patankar at a public event in Berkeley, CA.

Dr. R. H. Singh is Professor Emeritus and former Dean of Ayurveda at Banaras Hindu University, and a key consultant on Ayurveda to the Indian Central Government's Dept. of AYUSH (Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha & Homeopathy). Speaking at Vedika Gurukula, Vaidya Singh said that Ayurveda has always described health as harmonious balance in four dimensions: body, mind, senses and spirit. This is the theme of his new book that was launched amidst thunderous applause.
Shunya Pratichi Mathur, the Founder and Head Teacher of Vedika Global's back to tradition school of Ayurveda where this four-dimensional approach to health is taught and practiced, applauded Dr. Singh for championing the full-spectrum approach to Ayurveda in an era when the emphasis has been to make Ayurveda look like a parallel to Western medicine by highlighting a narrow view of its scope. Vaidya Singh in turn expressed his deep resonance with Vedika's Gurukula approach, praising the students and applauding this as an institute with heart and spirit.
